\"Getting Movement into your Work\"

Taught by Tom McCarthy

May 28-29, 2005 from 9am - 4:30pm at Monnda Welch's studio in Pittsboro.

Cost: $150 for members (you must be a member to participate).  Add $20 to your fee to join NCSG.

Making parts of your jewelry move is often necessary to make it wearable (link bracelets) and always makes it more interesting. This workshop will explore some simple mechanics to make things move back and forth and even spin front to back. We won't cover the traditional fussy tubular hinge as that would take all weekend. We will cover things to do with jump rings and using folding, drilling, and sawing to create moving parts. Basic metalsmithing skills are a prerequisite. There will be a Lab Fee, to be determined, usually under $50, and a materials fee if NCSG orders materials. Deadline for sign up is May 13; class size is limited to 10 participants.

He advised us to unbutton our shirt collars, change our mistakes into \"art marks\" (and charge more), and showed us many tricks for making secure joints between rounded pieces and adding motion to our work with various types of tiny hinges and rivets.
